Tank vs. Tankless Water Heaters: Which Is Right for Your Home?

Upgrading your water heater is a big decision. Here's a straightforward comparison to help you choose the best option for your family.

When it's time to replace your water heater, you have more options than ever. The two main choices are traditional tank water heaters and modern tankless (on-demand) units. Both have their advantages — the right choice depends on your household's needs and budget.

Traditional tank water heaters. These store a large volume of hot water (typically 40–80 gallons) and keep it heated continuously. They're less expensive to purchase and install, and they work with any type of plumbing. The downside is that they use energy constantly to keep the water hot, even when you're not using it.

Tankless water heaters. Also called on-demand water heaters, these heat water only when you need it. They're significantly more energy-efficient — up to 34% more efficient for homes that use less than 41 gallons per day. They also last longer (20+ years vs. 10–15 for tank units) and never run out of hot water.

The upfront cost difference. Tankless units cost more to purchase and install — often 2–3 times more than a tank unit. However, the energy savings and longer lifespan mean they often pay for themselves over time.

Flow rate considerations. A tankless unit has a maximum flow rate. If you're running multiple hot water fixtures simultaneously (shower + dishwasher + laundry), you may need a larger unit or multiple units.

Which is right for you? For smaller households or those on a tight budget, a high-efficiency tank unit is a solid choice. For larger families, those planning to stay in their home long-term, or anyone who wants endless hot water, tankless is worth the investment.
