Drain Clearing vs. Drain Cleaning: What's the Difference?

Not all drain services are the same. Understanding the difference can help you choose the right solution for your clogged drain.

When your drain is slow or completely blocked, you need it fixed fast. But did you know there's a difference between drain clearing and drain cleaning? Choosing the right service can save you time and money.

Drain clearing is the process of removing a specific blockage. This is what most people think of when they call a plumber for a clogged drain. A plumber uses a drain snake (also called an auger) to break up or retrieve the clog.

Drain cleaning goes further. Hydro-jetting uses high-pressure water to thoroughly clean the inside of your pipes, removing not just the blockage but also grease buildup, scale, and debris that can cause future clogs. It's the most thorough drain service available.

When to choose drain clearing. For a simple, isolated clog — a hair blockage in a shower drain, a foreign object in a toilet — drain clearing is fast, effective, and affordable.

When to choose drain cleaning. If you have recurring clogs, slow drains throughout your home, or you're dealing with a grease-heavy kitchen drain, hydro-jetting is the better long-term solution.

What about chemical drain cleaners? Store-bought drain cleaners can clear minor clogs, but they're harsh on your pipes and often don't fully remove the blockage. They're a temporary fix at best.
