Furnace Maintenance Tips to Keep Your Home Warm All Winter

A well-maintained furnace runs more efficiently, lasts longer, and keeps your family safe. Here's what you should be doing every season.

Your furnace is one of the hardest-working appliances in your home, especially during a Kelowna winter. Regular maintenance isn't just about comfort — it's about safety and efficiency.

Change your air filter regularly. This is the single most important thing you can do. A clogged filter restricts airflow, forces your furnace to work harder, and can cause it to overheat. Check it monthly and replace it every 1–3 months depending on usage.

Keep vents and registers clear. Make sure furniture, rugs, and curtains aren't blocking your supply and return vents. Blocked airflow reduces efficiency and can cause uneven heating.

Test your thermostat. Before the cold season hits, switch your thermostat to heat mode and verify it's calling for heat correctly. If your home isn't reaching the set temperature, it may be time for a thermostat replacement.

Check your carbon monoxide detectors. A cracked heat exchanger can leak carbon monoxide — a colourless, odourless gas that is deadly. Make sure your CO detectors are working and replace batteries annually.

Schedule a professional tune-up. An annual inspection by a licensed technician catches problems before they become emergencies. We check the heat exchanger, burners, ignition system, flue, and more.

Listen for unusual noises. Banging, rattling, or squealing sounds from your furnace are never normal. They can indicate loose components, a failing blower motor, or other issues that need attention.
